Maths and the Heart
Swami Chaitanya Keerti writes about the rainbow of love and its opposite,
hate
One can live all the colours of love - the rainbow of love - but it is not easy to understand what this phenomenon is.
Osho explains this in one of his discourses compiled in The Ancient Music in the Pines. Love is illogical. Love is irrational. Love is life. Love comprehends all contradictions in it. Love is even capable of comprehending its opposite, hate.
You go on hating the same person you love. But love is bigger. In fact, if you really love, hate is not a distraction; on the contrary it gives colour, spice. It makes the affair more colourful - like a rainbow.
Even hate is not the opposite for a loving heart. He can hate and continue loving. Love is so great even hate can be allowed to have its say. Lovers become intimate enemies. They go on fighting.
In fact, if you ask expert analysts, they'll say when a couple stops fighting, love has also stopped. When a couple becomes indifferent to each other, love stops. If you still fight wit your wife, husband, boyfriend or girlfriend, life is still running in it, it is still a live wire, still hot. Or else one settles into a sort of coldness, indifference.
Love is like wildlife - hence Jesus' saying: God is love. He means if you love, you will know many things which are qualities of God that he comprehends opposites.
That even the devil is allowed to have his say. That the enemy is also a friend. That death is not against life but a part of it and life is a part of death.
The whole is bigger than all opposites, not just a total of opposites - it is more than the total. That is higher mathematics of the heart.
Of course, a man of love will look mad. He will look mad to you because you function from the head, he functions from the heart; the languages are totally different.
For example, Jesus was crucified. His enemies waited for him to cures them and were a little afraid. His friends were waiting for him to do miracles that would cause the enemies to fall dead.
And what did he do? A near mad thing. He prayed to God to forgive these people because they didn't know what they were doing.
This is the madness of love. It is unexpected for someone who is being killed to pray for the forgiveness of his persecutors because they don't know what they are doing. The are completely unconscious. Sleepwalkers.
Whatsoever they are doing is not their responsibility, because how can you throw responsibility on somebody who is asleep? They are unconscious - forgive them. This is the miracle that happened that day, but nobody could see the miracle; it was sheer madness.
Love's language is so foreign to the head. Head and heart are farthest poles of reality.
There is no greater distance between any other two points, as there is between head and heart, reason and love, logic and life. If a person is mad because of love, his madness is not disease.
In fact, he is the only healthy person, the only holy person - because through his heart he has become bridged with life.
