The ‘MAD’ Game of Master And Disciple

By Swami Anand Kul Bhushan

It’s a ‘mad’ game with a beginning and no end. It starts when once a person acknowledges and is accepted by a master and becomes a disciple. Then the Master and the Disciple play this ‘mad’ game in which there are no winners. Osho’s insight of this ‘MAD’ (or Master And Disciple) Game is highlighted every year.

The real guru is one who enables the disciple to realize the disciple’s potential and Osho had this wonderful quality. In the Eastern tradition, the disciple does not question the guru because the guru knows what we want to know, should know and when should we know. The disciple can ask a question to the Master and get no reply for unknown reasons. But later, the disciple discovers that the answer comes from within or from his Master maybe many years later when he/she is ready to understand it.

Osho continues to attract more disciples today than when he was in his body 28 years ago because of what he talks is more relevant today and his meditation techniques are more appropriate for today’s high-stress lifestyles.

Osho says, “You can listen to a Master without being a disciple. You will hear the words but you will miss the meaning. You will hear the song but you will miss the music. You will hear the argument but you will miss the conclusion. You will know what he is saying but you will not be able to see where he is indicating.”

Osho says, “One can become a disciple only if one has tremendous love for the Master. What else can the disciple give to the Master? He can give his heart, he can give his love, he can give his trust. Then miracles are possible, miracles undreamed of, because once the disciple is ready, the Master can make the impossible happen.”

Osho says, “The Master can focus only when the disciple is open, when the disciple is surrendered, when the disciple is ready to learn, not to argue, when the disciple has come not to accumulate knowledge but to know truth, when the disciple is not only curious but is a seeker and is ready to risk all. Even if life has to be risked and sacrificed the disciple is ready. In fact, when you risk your sleepy life, you sacrifice your sleepy life, you attain to a totally different quality of life: the life of light, of love, the life that is beyond death, beyond time, beyond change.

When all questions , all doubts vanish and only trust remains in the Master; one becomes a true disciple. From then onwards, the disciple lives and works only for the Master and his will.

This is true surrender. From a disciple, the follower has become a devotee. Now he is the real path of submission to the master. They have finally met, become one.

Osho says, “The Master moves towards the disciple. The disciple moves towards the Master. Sooner or later they are going to meet. The meeting is not of the body; the meeting is not of the mind. The meeting is of the very soul - as if suddenly you bring two lamps close to each other; the lamps remain separate but their flames become one. Between two bodies when the soul is one, it is very difficult to say that it is a relationship. It is not, but there is no other word; language is really poor. It is at-oneness.”

Then the MAD Game starts in earnest at a different, higher level. As always, this game has a start and no end.
