THE LUMINOUS REBEL

This column is essentially a sharing of the vision and work of Osho. Osho is not a person, Osho is a phenomenon. One cannot comprehend his being and hence it is not possible to describe him in words. Osho is like Sun – radiant, powerful, and a nourishing phenomenon. Such as we can see everything in the light spread by Sun but we cannot see the Sun through our eyes, similarly, one can see the reality of life in the light of Osho but one cannot actually see him.

Osho is the "awakened one" the "enlightened one" -- the one who has seen "that which is" through pure consciousness and not through any mental projection. He shows that misery is the creation of the mind, and that the mind can be transcended. Even though the story of his extraordinary life is beyond verbal description, what little we may know of it can awaken us to find the same source of joy and divinity, peace and creativity that lies within us.

Osho is a rebel, not a non-conformist. He is not the one who like the reactionaries goes from one extreme to another. He is always in a balanced state. Osho is not a rebel as defined in the dictionary in the sense of one who is "fighting back", or "fighting against." Indeed, Osho's rebellion is of that nature, but "fighting back" gives only half of the picture, it is incomplete. Osho not only fought against all that is wrong, he not only dismantled the old, the rotten, and the irrelevant, but he also brought a new perspective, a new light in which we can see ourselves and the world around us with greater clarity and understanding. He completed the other half of the rebellion – he created a new vision for the entire humanity to live a better life. This is why Osho is a self-defining phenomenon –he is his own definition. His rebellion consists of destroying the schizophrenic state of humanity – the state of division and dichotomy created between matter and spirit, body and consciousness, Zorba and Buddha.

He has no map, no guide, every moment is new to him; every moment he arrives at a new space, at new experience, arrives at his own truth and his own vision. Truly, his life and work are a leela. A leela is where one cannot make any logical sense out of it, it is beyond logic and rationalism – it is spontaneous, existential, trans-rational.

A rebel is always alone in his fight against the false, the life negative, and the hypocritical. Osho says, in fact, that, "I am in the majority of One." One cannot put him into any category. Osho says: "I am a category by myself." All rebels are a category by themselves – Socrates, Jesus, Kabir, Meera – all are unique in their rebellion and in their vision.

Osho is basically a scientist of the soul. He is not a man of "religion" but his very being is a reflection of religiousness. He does not recommend that we go in search of God, but rather through meditation, love, and awareness we can spread godliness all around us. Hence, his message is: be free from the clutches of the past, discover your own path and move on with courage and commitment.

Here is what the well known writer and journalist Khushwant Singh says about Osho:

"In my opinion…he was the most original thinker that India has produced: the most erudite, the most clear-headed, and the most innovative. And in addition, he had an in-born gift of words – spoken and written. The like of him we will not see for decades to come...With the going of Rajneesh[Osho] India has lost one of its greatest sons."

REVELLING IN THE OSHO MAGIC

Bhawna Gera

The packed auditorium at the 75th birth celebrations of Osho clearly showed that the number of disciples of this spiritual guru is increasing by the day. Titled One with the sky, the evening promised to be worthy of Osho’s vision and a befitting tribute to the guru.

Conceived, scripted and directed by Dr Lavlin Thadani, it was a ‘mystical’ experience, as various judges pointed out. There were original fables, stories and poetry complemented by various artistic endeavours to keep the audience engrossed.

The presiding guest, Kiran Bedi, emphasised on what difference love and compassion can make in a person’s life. The chief guest of the evening, additional solicitor-general, Gopal Subramaniam remarked after watching the performances, “I don’t think anyone who leaves the hall would be the same again. The spiritual ex change of energy will surely touch everyone.” The guest of honour, Venkatnarayan, felt that the evening was brilliant and longed for more. Also present on the occasion was eminent writer and poet Kusum Ansal, politician Vasanth Sathe and poet Surinder Sharma.

The ‘grand finale’ as the speech by Surinder Sharma. The man of a few words, the poet managed to say a lot of serious stuff. That’s the power of Osho, we were reminded.
