Osho’s truth: Sex, sexuality and spirituality

Ever since his discourse From Sex to Super Consciousness in 1969, Osho has been labelled as the Sex Guru. But those who labelled him thus never bothered to read those discourses, or understand his words. The compilation of these discourses is just one of the over 650 books that have been compiled from his discourses on various topics from aesthetics to Zen. 
This story is enlightening: 

A young man went to be a monk in an ancient respected monastery. He was put to work as a scribe, copying texts. 

“Here is one,” said the abbot, “Brother Jasper has just finished it.” 

“But to copy from a copy! There might be errors... shouldn’t I copy the original?” 

“You’re right, my son, I’ll go to the cellars and bring it up for you,” said the abbot, and disappeared. 

One hour passed, two, three... the monks were alarmed, and went down to the cellars to see what had happened to the abbot. They found him sitting on the floor, an ancient open book before him, weeping copiously. 

“Look what I have found,” he cried, “there is an error! For centuries we have been writing CELIBATE, and here it says CELEBRATE.” 

Osho taught us to transform and transcend sex. He warned us not to suppress this vital energy. This is our natural energy and there is no need to become antagonistic towards it. Understand it. Befriend it. Live it. Transform it. And go beyond it. And that will bring a natural celibacy. 

But people did not understand this insight because they did not bother to. Hence this tag of sex-guru with Osho, who says that he is the most anti-sex guru. He urges us to sublimate our sexuality and reach for the stars, the higher consciousness, the super consciousness. He says: My whole work is to transform sexual energy into spiritual consciousness. 

Osho brought a fresh breeze of awareness and challenged the moralists who poison the minds of people. He became a liberating force and gave courage to people to discuss and understand sex without hesitation. But Osho did not teach indulgence. He says: Sex can become a stepping-stone towards samadhi. If you understand it deeply, if you experience it deeply, you will be free of it — but that freedom will have a totally different quality. It will not be a repressed sex. Repressed sex continues underground, goes on in your unconscious, on and on, and goes on affecting your life. 

Osho did not want people to remain stuck in sex but use it as a window to look into the open sky of super-consciousness. He said that the sexual orgasm is just a little window that opens into a wider and wider sky. You need not stay behind the window. You should thank your sexual energy that it opened the window — but go outside, because far bigger experiences are waiting for you. “Those who call me sex guru are simply stupid. They don’t understand a simple thing. people listen to me, there will be no pornography, there will be no homosexuals, there will be no lesbians — there will be no perversions of any kind. And you call me the “sex guru”!
